I don't usually go for books with premises like this. They're too unoriginal and easy-to-spot. I'm constantly left with the same thing over and over again. But something about Midnight Runes just left me wanting to grab it out of its picture, if you know what I mean. And turns out, it wasn't the best book in the world, but it was more of an "okay" read.
Now when I think about it... I am a little upset with the whole "paranormal" thing again.

It's very difficult to think of an unique idea for a paranormal/supernatural story. It can basically either be: vampires, werewolves, sirens, ghosts or some other kind of monster. But by the end of this book, the idea didn't make me squeal or anything. It can be described as: just like something else.
Another love triangle? AGAIN? (Especially in a paranormal story?)
Ugh. And I only liked Landon! (When I was hoping that I'd like both!)
Okay, back to the story. Brynn's living the life she's always wanted. (Just like most of these stories begin as.) She has a hot boyfriend, and friends who adore her. But then, a "mysterious stranger" begins to haunt her dreams. And then, her boyfriend dumps her. Talk about a string of bad luck charms all in one... Then, a new guy named Landon shows up at her school, and he somehow knows her ex, Trevor. Wow. And then there's someone mysterious watching her. *says sarcastically:* What will happen next?
This idea was hideous.
But the rest of the book wasn't that bad, actually! The characters were okay and the romance wasn't too bad, either.
The story started off strong and complete. The beginning was the way it was supposed to be! It got to the point quickly, and before I knew it, the story was gaining and gaining strength.
The author was trying so incredibly hard to get some suspense going but she just couldn't. And from then on, (around 45%) I was lost. By lost, I mean bored out of my mind and that's where I realized that this book's idea was not original at all. Always around 50%, I end up realizing my true inner thoughts of the book. And here, I obviously did.
Brynn was okay, Trevor was an a*s and Landon was cute. (The plot spoiled my mood to talk about these guys. But don't worry, they were not bad either.)
This book was
out of 5, I'd totally give this a 3, because it wasn't too bad or amazing either. In between, and that was basically because of the idea and plot. If you don't like cheesy paranormal, then you'd better run, sprint. But, if you're okay with it, then it's recommended.
Oh noes! Sucks that it was just another one of 'those' stories! The blurb does make it sound like a story that's just been recycled over and over. And a love triangle?? Ugh, no! I'm glad you were able to enjoy it at least a little bit, though! :)
ReplyDeleteProps for that! *pounds fists because someone agrees with me* Recycled stories are now my pet peeves. -.- Especially since they're paranormal, which I can barely get through by without barfing! I find that books in that genre are so difficult to get through unless there's something different about them in that case. Thank you, hun! :)
