Temptation, by R.L. Stine

Genre: Vampires, Thriller

Rating: 2/5 stars

Goodreads Summary: In this collection of three fan-favorite stories, the vampires of Sandy Hollow crave the summer months. Summer means plenty of beach tourists…and plenty of fresh blood after months of deprivation. But this year the Eternal Ones have decided to spice things up with a little bet: The first to seduce a hot date of the human variety, and then turn him into a fellow creature of the night, wins.

The catch? In order to successfully turn their prey, they must take only three small sips of blood on three different nights. If they take too much blood on any night, the human will die and the bet will be lost.

The setup sounds simple enough, but things quickly get complicated—especially since each vampire is just dying to quench her thirst...

Review:

Goosebumps, Goosebumps, Goosebumps. R.L. Stine is known for Goosebumps, and when I saw this at the bookstore, I’m like “He wrote a teen book? Cool beans bro.” So I obviously picked this up and couldn't wait to begin it.

Vampires are probably the cheesiest things to write about these days, I’m sick of reading about them. It’s always the same thing in every single book, like how far can you go with this subject? Let me tell you, not that far at all.

This about the known vampires, the cheesy ones found all through literature that need blood to survive and have mini cults and stuff and weird traditions. Almost like Twilight, but really, Twilight was cool, unlike this.

The “story” had no sense to it. Ouu, only three sips of blood or else the humans will die? What is this, Vampire Superheroes?

The story was really boring. I didn’t find much interesting except the romance that occurred every once in a while. I. Wanted. Something. Better. Is that hard to ask for?

Nectar? Ahaha, don’t kill me from rolling on the floor laughing. It’s so hilarious to see these old-school vampires come to life in this three-part book. The short story at the end wasn’t even bearable to read. Ugh.

Well forget about the bad things, I mean, there had to be some good in this, right? Aha, guess what, there really wasn’t. I don’t know if it’s just me because I’m “a teenager and born into the new generation,” but this was way too cheesy. Things have changed, and are going to keep changing, and if you’re sick and tired of vampires as much as I am, then slide this book away from you.

  1. R.L. Stine has been around a long time. I wonder if this is an old book reissued or newer? I think the author has a lot of competition with how good YA books are now. Too bad this was a disappointing read.

    1. I just checked now, and it was published in 2012, which is really surprising. I never knew. It could've been much better, coming from the year it was published. Yes, there's much more competition out these days, where back in the day it was either R.L. Stine and V.C. Andrews, from what I really know of.

  2. Hadn't heard of that one. I haven't read RL Stine since I was a teen. Though back then we just switched to adult stories if we wanted to read a lot. By high school I was reading John Grisham and epic fantasies (though some VC Andrews too, I liked Flowers in the Attic), and a few YA fantasy like Tamora Pierce. The ones I remember liking from RL Stine were Fear on 99th St. or something like that. It involved scary houses and cheerleaders, that's all I remember.

But I'll pass on any vampire if possible. They never interested me, twilight or not. Except maybe Dracula. It made for a pretty cool ballet in Denver.

    1. I think you might like it! I absolutely adored Flowers in the Attic, OMG. Did you know that they made a remake of the movie? I have it, but still need to watch it ASAP. :) I really would like to read something by Tamora Pierce, any suggestions?

    2. Definitely read the series about Alanna. I've only read two series by Tamora Pierce though. My sister has read them all. The series is Song of the Lioness.

And OMG. I actually saw the movie they first made of Flowers in the Attic. It was horrible. Didn't come close to the book at all. The other books wouldn't have happened if the book went the way of that movie. Just bad. Almost anything will probably be better than that version.

    3. Okay! Thank you so much for letting me know, I'll pick it up as soon as I can! :)

LOLOL, I heard that the first movie really sucked. I read the first two books, they were like in a bundle, but I still need to get the third and fourth, but I heard that they weren't from the same POV, so it's good as a change. I can't wait to watch the movie, the trailer already made me fangirl!

    4. Yeah. I liked the first and the second. I made it through If There Be Thorns but didn't care much for it. That one is from one of Catherine's son's pov. I didn't read any more after that. Then came college. I'll have to look up the new movie maybe, if it's closer to what happens in the book.

  3. Loving all your reviews! I've now added many more titles (and deleted some) from my "to read" list. And I'm with you on the vampires. When I see a book full of vamps, I put it back on the shelf and run. ;)
